Physical Education and Sport in the Primary School

Our Physical Education programme is based on the New Zealand Curriculum and aims to promote physical activity, well-being, and teamwork.

From Years 1 to 8, students engage in a variety of activities that focus on developing fundamental movement skills, fitness, sportsmanship, and healthy lifestyle choices.

Throughout the programme, students are encouraged to challenge themselves, work collaboratively, and develop perseverance and resilience. The curriculum includes a wide range of physical skills, team-building exercises, and sport-specific training, with a strong emphasis on creating a positive and inclusive environment for all learners.

Our goal is to inspire students to lead active, healthy lives and foster a lifelong love of physical activity.

Y3 – Y6 Swimming Programme

We are excited to announce that the John Walker Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation has once again selected our school to participate in the Community Swim Programme at the Ōtara Pool and Leisure Centre.

This programme is proudly sponsored by the Lion Foundation, Auckland Council, Potter Masonic Trust, and Water Safety New Zealand.

All Year 3, 4, 5, and 6 students will participate in this swimming programme during Term Two. They will receive seven 25-minute learn-to-swim lessons, delivered by qualified swimming instructors. The lessons are completely free, and the bus transport to and from the pool each week is also provided at no cost.

Teachers will accompany the students each week to ensure their safety and well-being. The instructors are all trained by Swimming New Zealand and hold a current First Aid Certificate. They also attend ongoing professional development through Swimsation in-house training, workshops, and appraisals.

The goal of the programme is to equip all students with the basic swimming skills they need to stay safe in the water.

Otara Sports Cluster

The Ōtara Sports Cluster offers a wide range of sports and opportunities for students to participate in inter-school competitions at the local level.

In addition to these events, the Cluster also hosts the Manaakitanga Festival, a special event designed to encourage students who may not have had the opportunity to try sports, to get involved and have a go.

This inclusive event aims to foster teamwork, sportsmanship, and a love of physical activity among all students.
